WHAT’S CAUSING YOUR WRIST/HAND PAIN?

WRIST FRACTURE

Common Problems & Symptoms:

A wrist fracture, or broken wrist, is a break to any of the ten bones of the wrist, although it most commonly occurs in the radius. It is a common outcome when one falls on an outstretched hand. Severe trauma such as car accidents, motorcycle accidents or falls from a ladder cause more severe injuries. Weak bones (for example, in osteoporosis) tend to break more easily.

Symptoms can include:

  • Pain, swelling, and bruising at the break site
  • Decreased mobility
  • Wrist deformity
  • Tingling in the fingers numb feeling numb at the tips

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Common Problems & Symptoms:

This condition occurs when the median nerve, one of the main nerves running through the hand, is compressed. This is a common occupational problem due to the positioning of the wrist and frequent repetitive motion.

One may experience:

  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the fingers
  • Shooting pain through the fingers and up the arm
  • Weakness and clumsiness of the hand

TRIGGER FINGER

Common Problems & Symptoms:

This issue occurs when one of the fingers becomes stuck in a bent position and may “snap” into a bent or straight position abruptly. It is caused when the sheath surrounding a tendon becomes inflamed and narrows. Thus, moving the tendon through the narrow sheath will result in a popping or snapping sensation. It is common amongst musicians, laborers, and people who make repetitive motions with their fingers.

Symptoms of trigger finger include:

  • Finger stiffness
  • A popping or clicking sensation as you move your finger.
  • Tenderness or a bump (nodule) in the palm at the base of the affected finger.
  • Finger catching or locking in a bent position, which suddenly pops straight.

OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE HANDS

Common Problems & Symptoms:

A degenerative disease, this type of osteoarthritis is a gradual depletion of the cartilage in the joints of the hand.

It can lead to:

  • Stiffness, and difficulty moving the fingers and grip
  • Achy painful joints
  • Swollen, tender hand

GANGLION CYSTS

Common Problems & Symptoms:

Ganglion cysts are small, oval, fluid-filled sacs that often occur along the tendons or joints of the hands or wrists. Such cysts are relatively common, and do not spread and they are not cancerous.

If a cyst is pressing on a nerve, you may experience:

  • Pain
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Muscle weakness
